KUCHING (Aug 24): Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) is urging relevant authorities to provide assistance and allocate some funds for impoverished families with school-going children to have access to learning aids and computers.
Its Southern Zone director of operation Lue Cheng Hing said under the current circumstances, computers have become an indispensable learning tool for all students and teachers.
“Ever since the Covid-19 pandemic started, students have been unable to attend physical classes and have to rely on remote learning and online classes.
“As such, computers and Internet connection are essential for students to get the full benefit of online learning,” he said in a statement.
However, he pointed out that the Internet network coverage for Sarawak is only 80 per cent at the moment, therefore, leaving students living in uncovered 20 per cent of the state without access to online learning.
“Many students who live in remote suburbs do not have access to the Internet and this makes it difficult for them to receive online education,” he said.
Furthermore, he added, the economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in a spike in unemployment and parents who are affected by this may not be able to purchase a computer for their children to attend online classes.
He also said that some families may not be able to afford paying for monthly Internet plans and called on relevant telco companies to offer discounts on education packages to students as well as teachers during this pandemic, much like what has been done by utilities companies in the state.
“I also urge the relevant departments to use wireless satellite technology to provide at least 4G network to all parts of Sarawak immediately especially in remote areas.
“This coverage would remain useful to everyone in the rural areas even after the pandemic is over and it will not be a waste of resources,” he said.
