KUCHING (July 7): Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) congratulates Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob on his appointment as Deputy Prime Minister, and Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein on his appointment as Senior Minister of Foreign Affairs who also leads the Security Cluster.
GPS secretary-general Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi in a statement tonight said their appointments were timely considering current political environment.
At the same time, Nanta hoped that focus will be shifted back to more pressing issues like the welfare, well -being and security of the people aside from the country’s economic recovery in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“As leaders, we all need to remember that the people are watching everything that is happening, and most importantly many disagree with the political games that may threaten the stability of the country at this moment,” he said.
Thus, Nanta added, the appointment of the two well-known leaders for their leadership and abilities was in tandem with the great responsibilities placed on their shoulders, he said.
“I used to work with Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob when he was Minister of Rural and Regional Development as his deputy and I admire his leadership. Hence, I believe he has ability to carry out his duties well as Deputy Prime Minister.
“Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein also has a good reputation and could even manage crises when the country is faced with issues related to the missing flight MH370 which is still the current hot topic by many including foreign leaders,” he said.
At the same time, Nanta also sought Hishammuddin’s help on security issues in the state. Among them were the aerial border encroachment by 16 Chinese aircrafts at the end of May and Chinese coastguard vessel encroaching Beting Patinggi Ali in early June.
“I am confident and believe that the appointment of both of them will give a new breath to the administration of the country in the fight against Covid-19,” he said.
