MIRI (July 6): There is no report of sudden deaths involving pigs or wild boars in Telang Usan so far, amidst the district being one of two areas in Sarawak declared as African Swine Fever (ASF) disease control areas.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau, when contacted yesterday, said he had just returned from visiting his constituents and was unaware that his constituency had been declared as an ASF disease control area.

“I had just come back from visiting my ‘kawasan’ (area), so I was not aware.

“Having said that, I have not heard anything or received any report about sudden deaths involving pigs or wild boars in Telang Usan,” he said.

In this regard, Dennis said he had sent the message to all community chiefs and grassroots leaders in his constituency to always be on the lookout, and report to the authorities immediately should they come across suspicious deaths involving pigs or wild boars.

The Department of Veterinary Services (DVSS) Sarawak director Dr Adrian Susin Ambud, in a news report yesterday, had confirmed the classification of Kapit Division and Telang Usan District as ASF disease control areas.

The order was declared by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas – also the Minister of Agriculture Native Land and Regional Development Sarawak – in view of news reports about suspected ASF outbreak at Nunukan and Krayan provinces in North Kalimantan, Indonesia; and the close proximity of these provinces with Kapit and Telang Usan.
