MIRI (June 30): A jobless man was today charged in a Magistrates’ Court here with exposing himself to his teenage sister-in-law.

No plea was taken when the charge under Section 15(a)(i) of the Sexual Offences Against Children 2017 was read to the 31-year-old.

The Section provides for up to 10 years in prison, or a maximum RM20,000 fine, or both upon conviction.

Senior Assistant Registrar Eleanor Mako Timothy set bail at RM12,000 in two local sureties and also ordered the accused not to disturb or interfere with the victim.

He is also required to report himself to the investigating officer once a fortnight.

However, the man failed to furnish bail resulting in him being further detained in the police lockup.

The accused was arrested earlier this month for allegedly exposing himself to the 16-year-old girl at his in-laws’ house in Senadin at around 8.30am on June 5 this year.

Prosecuting officer ASP Mary Ong had applied for bail to be set at RM20,000 given the nature of the offence.

The accused, who was unrepresented by counsel, had asked the court for a lower bail amount as he is currently jobless.

The court has set Aug 2 for next mention of the case in the Sessions Court.
