SARIKEI (June 18): Strong wind damaged to the roof over the verandah of a longhouse (Rumah Banyan) at Lepong Bangkit in Sungai Pakan near here Tuesday.
According to head of Bintangor Fire and Rescue Department, Nicholas Belulin, the roof over several units of the 25-door longhouse was ripped off by the strong wind around 9pm.
In response to a distress call received from a longhouse resident at 9.30pm, the department immediately dispatched three personnel to the longhouse, located about 48km from Bintangor, he said.
“When the firemen arrived at the scene the strong wind has stopped, but it has done its damage,” he said.
The roof over the verandah of 16 units of the 25-door longhouse has collapsed, resulting in the damage of five water meters, six vehicles and a motorcycle parked underneath, he added.
No one was injured in the incident.
The firemen, after having recorded statement from the residents and assessed the damage, left the scene.
