Kolej Laila Taib offers free training on drone flying

A drone is used to survey the roofing of Sibu Central Market.

SIBU (June 12): Kolej Laila Taib (KLT) is offering free training on drone flying which will be incorporated into existing engineering programmes.

In a press release yesterday, it said this was in view of the increasing demand from industries and rapid advancement of drone technology.

“Two types of drones will be used in the programme – DJI Mini 2 and DJI E99 drone,” it stated.

The comprehensive programme will offer training in theory and practical sessions. Theory session will involve local regulations and restrictions in operating a drone, basic safety rules of flying drones in open space and basic components of drones. Students will also be exposed to user interface of DJI Mini Fly App and learn about its basic features.

In practical session, lecturers will demonstrate how to maneuver the drone and things to remember when operating it. Students will be given DJI E99 drone for maneuver practice and after a few try outs, students will be given DJI Mini 2 to operate at restricted heights.

Assignments will be given such as taking photos of specific structure from specified height and perform survey record within a specific region, added the statement.

“KLT is committed to promote the use of drone in industry for better efficiency and cost saving. Recently, KLT submitted a proposal for the Roofing Maintenance Access Project for Sibu Central Market to SMC.

“During the preliminary planning stage, DJI Mini 2 drone was actively used to survey the target building. The project was to look for ways to access the existing roofing of Sibu Central Market for the building maintenance team to clean the gutters and maintenance of ventilation units,” it revealed.

Additionally, several snapshots and video were taken using DJI Mini 2 to pinpoint the locations for proposed access.

“Also, we were able to investigate the current roofing conditions and make modification updates on our proposal.

“We compiled the photos taken and video footage from DJI Mini 2 drone as presentation to SMC committees. This project serves as a great experience for KLT to further promote the use of drone in relevant industries.”

It pointed out that drone technology has shown popularity among existing industries where skill to operate drone becomes necessary for future professional development.
