MIRI (June 12): A total of 5,191 residents in the division have signed up to donate blood at Malaysian Red Crescent Miri District (MRC Miri) since the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in March last year.

MRC Miri Blood Recruitment Committee deputy chairman Karambir Singh, in a press statement updated that as at June 6, a total of 116 blood donation campaigns had been held at its training institute here.

“Of the 5,191 who registered, 4,383 successfully donated to Miri Hospital Blood Bank which was very encouraging milestone especially during the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.

MRC Miri Training Institute was chosen as the venue for mobile blood donation as its size and facilities are suitable for handling blood donation activities with strict adherence to standard operating procedure (SOP) including proper social distancing.

“Though blood stock at the blood bank is on the low side compared to pre-Covid-19, it is still considered manageable with the support of regular blood donors,” he said.

Therefore, MRC Miri district is hoping for more donors to help stabilise blood stock.

To mark World Blood Donor Day on June 14, MRC Miri District and Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA) will be jointly holding a blood donation drive today (June 12) from 8.30am to 1pm.

“The contribution of every donor is beyond words. We hope to invite new blood donors to come forward and contribute to the noble cause,” he said.

Meanwhile, support for the campaign on Sunday has been received from sponsors Shun Shen Lee Trading Sdn Bhd (SSL), The Twin Brothers Patisseries and Maestro Swiss Trading.

At the event, successful blood donors will each receive a packet of 5kg rice, a bottle of 500ml Merris Red Palm Oil Classic, a packet of white bread, goodie bag containing Indocafé and Vico; a certificate of appreciation, an ecobag and face masks.
