KOTA KINABALU: Former Sabah Parks director Dr Jamili Nais has reiterated the importance of search and rescue (SAR) simulation training sessions on Mount Kinabalu.

He said that it is vital for the team to be ready should they face any unwanted disasters that could hit Sabah.

“The SAR simulation training should be held once every two years whenever it is possible to do so.

“The use of more advanced rescue equipment such as drones, satellites and digital/online information platforms should be expanded,” said Jamili in his speech during Sabah Parks’ teleconference, which was held in conjunction with the sixth anniversary of the Mount Kinabalu earthquake.

Jamili revealed that Sabah Parks and the relevant agencies had been conducting the SAR sessions once every two years since 2016.

However, the session could not be conducted since 2020 until now due to the Covid-19 restrictions.

Six years ago, on June 5, 2015, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake had hit Mount Kinabalu.

A total of 18 lives, which included mountain guides and pupils from Singapore, were lost on that tragic day.
