Nanta: CM to meet Agong on dissolution of State Legislative Assembly

KUCHING (May 15): Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg will seek an audience with Yang di-Pertuan Agong with regards to the dissolution of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN).

Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) secretary-general Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi said the dissolution of the Sarawak DUN will be on a date the King, after consultation with Yang di-Pertua Negeri, thinks appropriate.

“The Most Honourable Chief Minister has had an audience with the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak and informed that under the Sarawak Constitution the tenure of our DUN would end on June 6, which is five years from the date of its first meeting on June 6, 2016 after the Sarawak election of 2016.

“However, this provision of the State Constitution has no effect by virtue of the Emergency Ordinance 2021,” said the Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs in a statement today.

Nanta, who is also Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) secretary-general, said that there was full confidence and trust in their wisdom to decide on the date for the dissolution of DUN.

He said it was widely known that the current DUN term would expire on June 6.

Under normal circumstances, he said the DUN would have been dissolved for the return of the people’s mandate to democratically elect their government in a polls.

“But we are under a health pandemic Covid-19 Emergency until Aug 1, 2021,” he added.
