SIBU (March 3): Sibu Divisional Disaster Management Committee (SDDMC) coordinator Dr Annuar Rapaee said the people of Sibu may not be able to celebrate Ching Ming Festival again this year due to seriousness of Covid-19 situation here.

He said Sibu still has a long way to go to revert to a Covid-19 green zone and there are still many areas that are currently under lockdown.

“My gut feeling said that I do not think we can have it. A lot of cases that popped up these few months are mostly because of social gatherings.

“They are not big gatherings, but the catastrophe is so huge, so we should consider this,” he said at the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting Facebook live discussion today.

Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew, Bukit Assek assemblywoman Irene Chang, and Pelawan assemblyman who joined the discussion also shared the same sentiment that Sibu is not ready to have Ching Ming celebration which falls on April 4.

Chang and Wong also said that policy makers must be consistent in their decision making to ensure that everyone could play their part in curbing the pandemic in Sibu.

Meanwhile, everyone in the discussion agreed with the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee’s (SDMC) decision to postpone the school session in Covid-19 red zones in the state until March 14.

Chang and Wong even went to the extend of hoping that SDMC would consider postponing the school session until the end of March.
