Come clean over Twitter account, Kit Siang’s aide tells MCMC

MCMC claimed yesterday that its Twitter account had been hacked.

PETALING JAYA: An aide to DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang has urged the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to come clean over its Twitter account after some of its old posts laced with expletives had surfaced on social media yesterday.

Syahredzan Johan, Lim’s political secretary, said MCMC’s claim that it had been hacked did not make sense as the postings were made several years ago, adding that it was impossible to backdate social media posts.

He pointed out that another social media user, going by the Twitter handle @NazruiHakim, has claimed that the MCMC account was his old personal account that was sold to an individual a few years ago, as it had around 50,000 followers.

“His claim raises several questions that need to be answered. First, is it true that MCMC’s account used to be a personal account as alleged? If true, what need is there for MCMC to take over a personal account?

“If it was taken over by MCMC, is it true that payments were made? Was the payment, as claimed by @NazruiHakim, made by MCMC and how much was paid?

“Lastly, if MCMC did make payments, did it go through the right government procurement process?” he asked in a statement today.

Syahredzan maintained that these questions needed to be answered by MCMC as well as the communications and multimedia ministry as this involves a statutory body with the authority to regulate any form of communication and online social interactions.

Social media was abuzz yesterday after old posts from MCMC’s Twitter account which were laden with expletives and were offensive in nature resurfaced.

This came after MCMC had told Malaysians to be courteous and respectful when airing their views online.
