235 arrested for MCO-related offences

KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested 235 individuals yesterday for offences in relation to the movement control order, Senior Minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said today.

Of the total, Ismail said 233 were issued compound fines while the remaining two were remanded.

Among the offences were not wearing face masks, failure to register or provide materials for contact tracing, and failure to observe physical distancing.

A total of 2,990 compliance task force teams were deployed to conduct checks on supermarkets, restaurants, hawker stalls, factories, banks, government offices, as well as land, water and air transport terminals.

Ismail also said police detained 40 undocumented migrants and five smugglers under Ops Benteng. Seven vehicles and four boats were also confiscated.

He added that 87,013 people arrived through KLIA between July 24 and Dec 15 from various countries.

A total of 532 people tested positive and were sent to hospital for treatment, while 77,076 have been allowed to return home.

Some 9,405 people are currently undergoing mandatory quarantine.
