What do you get when you come across a pair of siblings named King and Queen? A little tri-coloured Pembroke Welsh corgi who was named Ace, of course!

“We are indeed a poker family,” laughs Queenie, who tells FMT that she and her brother have been the biggest fan of corgis due to their peachy bottoms and happy faces.

Close to three years ago, the siblings made their dream come true by welcoming Ace into their lives. The name was only fitting, and, according to Queenie, the name was also inspired by the siblings’ favourite character in the One Piece anime series called ‘Portgas D Ace’.

“But we all call him ‘Acey’ at home, which is the Cantonese way of pronouncing the word,” says Queenie.

Being part of a family named after a playing cards game, one would expect all its members to have the best poker face. That’s not the case with Ace though, who has the biggest smile ever, says Queenie.

“He’s known to have his tongue always out, and his saliva all over the floor. All the while we thought that it was because of Malaysia’s hot weather, until we recently learnt that he may have bronchitis or asthma,” explains Queenie, who adds that they have yet to seek a second opinion.

Despite the minor setback, nothing can stop Ace from having the best time all the time. Queenie relates that Ace would always be running left and right and is unstoppable when he’s in the mood for zoomies.

He’s also the smallest of the three dogs King and Queenie have at home – the other two being Dobermans who are younger yet bigger than Ace.

“But he is not afraid of them and always acts like he’s the boss of the house. My mum has repeatedly reminded Ace that she’s the actual boss of the house, not him. This didn’t really work though,” remarks Queenie with a chuckle.

Domineering and active personality aside, Ace is also extremely cuddly and enjoys being cuddled by strangers too.

Queenie calls him a 100% attention seeker as he would demand cuddles all the time – especially when she’s busy with work, and even when she tells him “NO”.

Ace brings this stubbornness to his food as well, as Queenie says that he would rather starve himself than eat the kibbles bought especially for him.

“This naturally resulted in a gastric problem too. But he never says no to treats, any kind of treats. He’s a big fan of pork ear and always looks forward to it.”

With year-end celebrations around the corner, Queenie genuinely worries for Ace – because he’s afraid of firecrackers and fireworks! Add this to the list of Ace’s fears, which includes thunder, the guitar, mosquito and at times, Queenie herself.

But, Ace does redeem himself as he is pretty good with tricks like ‘sit’, ‘hand’, ‘roll over’, ‘bang bang’, ‘go around’ and ‘turn around’, just to name a few.

“For his age, we would say he does a pretty good job but he is very lazy, as he does all the tricks in slow motion. He really is taking his own sweet time,” says Queenie exasperatedly, but her fondness for Ace cannot be missed.

All things aside, Ace is very good at cheering people up with his cute smile. And although he can dish out pretty disapproving faces at times, Queenie says he is also the sweetest pup that always greets them when they get home.

“I wouldn’t be able to imagine a day without him. Ace is our most precious baby!”
