Woman dies in Pontian after being struck by lorry on road shoulder

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 28 — A 54-year-old woman died after a lorry struck her while she was crossing the road at KM75.5 Jalan Johor Baru–Batu Pahat in Pontian.

The incident occurred around 11.40am yesterday, according to Pontian district police chief Superintendent Mohammad Shofee Tayib, as reported by The Star.

“Initial investigations suggest the accident happened when the woman was crossing from the right to the left,” he said in a statement.

“Due to the close distance, the 28-year-old lorry driver swerved and hit the victim on the road shoulder,” he added.

Police confirmed the woman died at the scene from severe head injuries, while the lorry driver was unharmed.

Authorities are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving resulting in death.

The law provides for a jail term of five to 10 years, a fine between RM20,000 and RM50,000, and disqualification from holding a driving licence for at least five years upon conviction.

Police urged witnesses to contact the Pontian district traffic office or reach out to Inspector Wan Hairi at 012-3450565 to assist in the investigation.
