This morning, 3 July, the Twitter feed of Malaysians was filled with absolutely real but unbelievable footage of the ocean on fire, literally

“The ocean is on fire” is one of those things that you can type and it’s true and yet it doesn’t feel believable https://t.co/EouJfQIbjq

The seemingly “portal to hell” opened up after a rupture in an undersea gas pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico early on Friday, 2 July

It appears hell has opened up in the Gulf of Mexico.

It took fire-fighting boats more than five hours to put out the fire

According to a report in Reuters, the fire on the ocean surface west of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula has now been extinguished after more than five hours of fire-fighting boats spraying more water on the flame.

The fire began in an underwater pipeline that connects to a platform at Mexico’s state-owned oil company Pemex’s flagship Ku Maloob Zaap oil development, the Reuters report said.

Although, the irony of fighting a fire in the water with… water was not lost on many

We know we’re doing our best for the planet when we have to SPRAY WATER ON THE OCEAN BECAUSE WE SET IT ON FIRE!!!! https://t.co/s2BIpakwhq

Never in your life forget the time humans caught the ocean on fire and then tried to put it out by spraying water on it. https://t.co/W7D5Qezfp3
