MIRI (July 6): A senior citizen was among three persons nabbed by police at a cockfighting session at Jalan Sebato Niah on Sunday.
The trio, aged 31, 46 and 70, were among a large number of people taking part in the illegal activity when police arrived at the scene following a public tip-off.
The rest of the participants managed to flee into the surrounding jungle upon realising the presence of the raiding party.
Six live cockerels, a weighing scale and ‘Holo’ paraphernalia in the form of a betting board, table, chairs and dice were among the items seized by police.
Miri police chief ACP Hakemal Hawari confirmed the arrests when contacted yesterday, saying the three men are being investigated under Section 3(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1963.
