SIBU (June 29): The National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme for Sibu Division is on track to administer an average of 5,000 doses daily next month, said Dr Annuar Rapaee.

The Sibu Divisional Disaster Management Committee (SSDMC) coordinator said the daily inoculation target would then increase to 7,000 doses daily in August as more vaccination centres (PPVs) begin operations.

“Hopefully we will be able to bring down the number of Covid-19 cases and life can be expected to return to a certain degree of normalcy by then,” he told reporters after visiting the Sibu Agape Centre PPV at Jalan Alan today.

Dr Annuar said the industrial vaccination centre (PPVIN) at University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS), which started Covid-19 vaccinations yesterday, managed to administer about 1,000 doses.

He said the participation of UCTS as a selected centre would help enhance the vaccination agenda.

“With the participation of UCTS PPVIN, we are confident that we can achieve the target of 7,000 daily doses by August,” he said.

However, Dr Annuar said much still depended on the vaccine supply from the federal government as promised.

“If we are the given the supply as promised and the supply arrives on time, then there will no issue of the people going out for social activities in time to come and no issue of manpower shortage to fight the virus,” he said.

He also reminded Sibu folk not to expect the number of cases to drop drastically despite the high vaccination rate as it will take about two to three weeks to see results.

He stressed the people should continue to adhere strictly to standard operating procedures (SOP) to stop Covid-19 from spreading.

Dr Annuar also thanked non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for working together with the government to help combat the virus.

“We need to speed up the vaccination rate as that is the only way to help us manage and control the spread of the virus,” he added.

Among those present were Association for Children with Special Needs Sibu (ACSNS) chairman Kapitan Datuk Janet Lau and secretary Dr Toh Teck Hock.
