Search ongoing for woman who fell into river which picking up stones in Lawas

The SAR operation to locate the missing woman has been suspended as darkness fell and will resume today.

MIRI (July 11): A 24-year-old woman is feared drowned after she was said to have fallen into a river when picking up stones with her sister-in-law at Long Sukang in Lawas yesterday afternoon.

Limbang Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief Awangku Mohd Hazmin Awang Zainal said they received a call on the incident at around 4.35pm.

He added that the victim, from Long Sukang is said to be picking up stones with her sister-in-law, who is also 24 years old, before falling into the river.

“According to the report received, the victim and her sister-in-law were picking up stones by the river when suddenly a water column (kepala air) appeared from upstream, causing the victim to fall into the river and swept away in strong river current,” he said.

Awangku pointed out a search and rescue (SAR) operation to find the woman has been conducted by the villagers, while a team comprising three personnel from Lawas Fire and Rescue Station has arrived at the scene, which is located more than one hour away from the station to assist in the operation.

“The victim has yet to be found and the SAR operation has been suspended as darkness fell and will resume tomorrow (today),” he added.
