KUCHING (June 29): Sarawak United has chosen black as their home colour this season making them the first team in the Malaysian top two leagues to play their home matches in black.

It was however not known whether there any other team who play their home matches in black outside of the Super and Premier league at the moment, but if there is none, then Sarawak United might as well also be the only team in the Malaysian to wear black kits for their home matches.

According to Sarawak United FC chairman Dato Posa Majais, black was chosen as the team’s colours for their home matches because of the legendary “black cat myth” which was associated with the Sarawak state football team of the 1980s.

“We want to remember those day when Sarawak football was on the ascend in the Malaysian football arena in the 1980s by wearing black for our home matches.

“Many of the older generation of football fans would know the relation between a black cat and Sarawak football so this a tribute to that era,” added Posa who was interviewed by TVS today.

The ‘black cat myth’ started the 1980s when Sarawak fans or their team were allegedly accused of bringing a black cat to the stadium whenever Sarawak play their match at home matches in which the opposing team would call it a practice of black magic to help the home team get desired results from the match.

The accusation coincided with Sarawak’s rise in the Malaysian football under the guidance of former head coach Awang Mahyan Awang Mohamed.

Although Sarawak United have been playing in black jerseys since the start for the Premier League season this year, the team’s officials never announced that they have chosen black colour as the team’s official home colour until today.

Following the announcement of the team’s colour of choice for their home matches this season, the team had also launched their new kits for this season as well, just in time before the start of the second half of the Premier League season this year.

Spanish sports brand Joma continues to be the kit makers for the Golden Hornbills too.

Since the start of the 2021 Premier League season, the team have been kit templates of the Selangor state football team for last season in the end of the 2021 Premier League season’s first half, which were also made by Joma.

Known as the “interim kit” by the club officials the kit used by Sarawak United for the first half of the 2021 Premier League season also introduced Sarawak United’s new logo which features a Dayak Shield on it.

“We are glad that we have finally been able to reveal our official kits for this season today,” said Posa.

While Sarawak United will continue to wear black, albeit to with a new design, to play their home matches, the team will also wear either blue or red to play their away matches for the remainder of the 2021 Premier League season.

“The colour design of Sarawak United kits for this season will remind Sarawakians of the Sarawak state football team of the yesteryears. We do not want to forget the identity of that team which has been the pride of the people of Sarawak for many years,” said Posa.

The new Sarawak jerseys are available on sale at the club’s website at https://sarawakunitedfc.com, and more details on the team’s new kits are available at the club’s official Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/sarawakunitedfcofficials.
