KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 16 — The government has postponed tabling the controversial amendments to the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act (Act 342) to the next Dewan Rakyat sitting amid strong public protest.

The amendments, which among others seek to increase the current maximum RM1,000 compound payment rate to RM10,000 for individuals and RM500,000 for companies, have raised concerns over potential abuse.

De facto Law Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar announced the postponement in the House earlier today, just as Minister of Health Khairy Jamaluddin met with activists protesting the amendments outside Parliament gates.
