Opportune time for GPS to pull support from PN – PKR Sarawak

Abun Sui Anyit

KUCHING (July 9): Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) should withdraw their support for Perikatan Nasional (PN), said Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak.

Its information chief Abun Sui Anyin said GPS should not wait and see the next episodes for now is a golden opportunity for GPS to bring Sarawak to new heights, given that it is a strong block and because of that they have bargaining power.

“Why not the GPS support that has been wasted by the failed PN government be shifted to Pakatan Harapan (PH) for the coalition to lead the country.

“Being a strong block, GPS can demand for the post of Deputy Prime Minister be given to a Sarawakian.

“This is not an impossible thing in the world of politics,” he said in a statement in response to Umno’s decision to draw its support for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yasin.

Abun pointed out that technically, Muhyiddin no longer has the majority and therefore pursuant to Article 43 (4) of the Federal Constitution, the Prime Minister should resign or seek the consent of His Majesty the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong for the dissolution of the Dewan Rakyat.

He, however, said with the Covid-19 pandemic still plaguing the country, the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong will most likely not allow the dissolution of Parliament to make way for the country to hold its 15th General Election (GE15).

The Umno supreme council meeting on Wednesday night decided that the party withdraw their support for Muhyiddin.

Its president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Muhyiddin had failed to adhere to Umno’s list of seven guidelines for the party’s continued support of the PN government spelled out on March 11 last year.

“To fulfil the unanimous mandate of the delegates in 2020 Umno General Assembly, and based on the seven failures of the government to meet the aspirations of the people outlined earlier, then the period to give support to Tan Sri ‘Mahiaddin’ as PM is withdrawn and terminated immediately,” he said in a press conference online five hours after the meeting started.

He urged Muhyiddin to take the honourable route and step down from office.

Zahid said Umno wants a new interim prime minister appointed until the Covid-19 crisis in Malaysia reaches a stable state and herd immunity is achieved through vaccination.

“The new prime minister’s tenure should only focus on helping the rakyat throughout the pandemic, overcoming Covid-19 through a more inclusive approach and ensuring the vaccination and immunisation process is sped up.

“After successfully achieving the level of group immunisation, the new PM must immediately advise the YDPA to hand over the mandate back to the people to hold GE15,” he said, referring to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Zahid, however, stressed that the Umno supreme council will not endorse opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim or the Pakatan Harapan coalition that includes the DAP to be the interim government.
