Longhouse chief in Sarikei compounded RM4,000 for organising Gawai celebration with visitors

KUCHING (July 6): A longhouse chief in Sungai Sentubu in Sarikei was compounded RM4,000 by the Sarikei Divisional Health Office today, said the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

SDMC said that the longhouse had celebrated Hari Gawai with te presence of visitors, which complicated physical distancing and flouting the standard operating procedures (SOP) of the Movement Control Order (MCO).

The committee in its daily update also noted that the State Health Department had issued 67 compounds recently for various offences defying the SOP.

“Out of the number of compounds issued between June 27 to July 3 this year, 53 compounds are individual compounds while 14 are corporate compounds.

“This brings the cumulative tally of compounds issued by the State Health Department since March 11, 2021 to 303 compounds,” said SDMC.

Meanwhile, SDMC also revealed that police have issued a total of 70 compounds in the districts of Kuching, Bintulu, Miri, Lawas and Sibu recently.

“Topping the list of offences is carrying passengers exceeding the permitted limit of passengers at 14 compounds followed by being in public after 10pm (13 compounds, all in Bintulu),” it said.

Other offences are for failing to scan MySejahtera before entering a premise (11), not wearing face mask (10), gathering without physical distancing (8), being in public after 12am (6) and performing prohibited activities under MCO (6).

One compound each was also issued by the police to a factory which failed to provide temperature scanners and for an offender who crossed districts without a permit.

“Since March 18, 2020, the police have issued a total of 8,880 compounds for SOP violations,” said SDMC.

The Ministry of Local Government and Housing have also issued nine compounds recently for various offences such as not updating or incomplete registration books (3), not using face mask (3) and operating without permission (3).

The compounds were issued by the Bintulu Development Authority, Sarikei district council, Padawan Municipal Council, Saratok district council and the Marudi district council.

Since Feb 1, 2021 the ministry has issued a total of 1,243 compounds.
