PENAMPANG: Public have been warned not to make any insulting comments in social media, especially towards law enforcers as severe action will be taken against them.

Penampang police chief DSP Mohd Haris Ibrahim said police will not hesitate to take action according to the law following a viral comment which allegedly criticised the Royal Malaysian Police while performing their duty during the Movement Control Order (MCO 3.0) in Penampang recently.

The content of the message read: “Traveling from Lido (KK) to Survey Supermarket (Ppang) without valid reason summoned for inter-district travel, RM5,000. Orang gila punya kerja?”

Police investigation revealed that the comment, which went viral in social media, was in reference to a compound issued by a police officer from the Penampang police contingent (IPD Penampang) to an individual who had violated the standard operating procedure (SOP) of the MCO 3.0 by making cross-district movement without permission.

“Police are currently conducting an investigation on the individual and we have opened an investigation paper for investigation under Section 509 of the Penal Code for word or gesture intended to insult the modesty of a person,” said Haris, adding that the offence carries a jail term of up to five years or a fine, or both, if found guilty.

Haris therefore reminds the public not to upload or share any negative comment, remarks or insult in social media as action will be taken.

He also reminds the public to continue to abide by the SOP that has been set by the government in effort to stop the spread of the pandemic.
