Earlier this week, plain-clothed policemen raided a gym in Jalan Bagan Luar, Butterworth, where a group of men were working out in violation of the restrictions placed under the movement control order (MCO)
According to Seberang Prai Utara police chief ACP Noorzainy Mohd Noor, a total of six people were found using the workout equipment at the premises during the raid at about 5.40pm on Tuesday, 15 June.
One of them was the owner, aged 58, while the rest were customers.
Noorzainy said that of the five customers at the gym, four – aged between 36 and 52 – were slapped with a RM2,000 compound each for flouting the standard operating procedures (SOPs). The fifth customer, who was an underaged student, was not issued with any compound and was let off with a warning.
The gym owner, on the other hand, was slapped with a RM10,000 compound.
While gyms are not allowed to operate during the MCO, the owner claimed to have opened the premises at the customers’ behest
“When questioned, he admitted to opening his business according to customers’ requests during the lockdown period,” Noorzainy said, adding that he first told them that he was arranging the equipment.
Non-essential businesses are not allowed to operate without permission currently.
