KUCHING (Aug 22): Locals can consider venturing into crawfish production commercially, as it brings many opportunities as it has high demand both locally and internationally, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggahh Embas.

Uggah said this after a visit to the Tian Yen Enterprise crawfish breeding project in Tarat, Serian today.

The Minister of Agriculture Modernisation, Native Land and Regional Development said he was very happy with the progress shown since the company started six months ago.

“Crawfish is another economic activity full of potential. This is also our trial project run by a private company,” he said in a statement today, adding that he hoped some local farmers will be keen to venture into this project as they can learn from te company.

The company’s Chief Business Development Officer Tom Pooh Siang Sung was present to shoow Uggah around.

The company has managed to produce crawfish weighing 600 grammes, which is marketable.

Pooh said that the company plans to eventually move into the export markets in Singapore, Japan, China and Cambodia.

“Locally, we are trying to start producing by this December and we are moving in stages in our expansion. Crawfish production needs time – five to six months – to produce the marketable size,” he said.

“Now we are in the fry production stage. And then we will ramp up our production.”

Crawfish are freshwater crustaceans resembling small lobsters.
