MIRI (June 14): The Federation of Miri Division Chinese Associations (FCA) urges the state government to prioritise vaccination for regular blood donors.
FCA president Datuk David Goh recalled a proposal to Ministry of Health in April to give priority in the second phase of the National Immunisation Programme to those who have donated blood more than 50 times.
Goh reasoned that since the pandemic started, regular donors are the ones who help ensure sufficient blood stock for those in need as donation has gone down.
“Allowing them to be vaccinated first would show the government’s appreciation of their humanitarian contribution,” he said while officiating FCA’s blood donation campaign yesterday.
He pointed out World Health Organisation (WHO) safety guidelines for blood transfusion services for blood banks and donors.
“According to WHO, those who have recovered from infection of the virus can donate blood after one week (for asymptomatic case) and two weeks (for symptomatic case) after making full recovery.
“Donors who experience respiratory illness within 28 days after donating blood must notify the blood bank to check on other donors within specific time frame.”
Referring to information by special committee on Covid-19 Vaccine Supply (JKJAV), Goh stated that one can donate blood seven days after receiving vaccine (of any brand) provided any side effects from the vaccine have completely receded.
“This shows that donors need not worry and could always check with Miri Hospital Blood Bank regarding eligibility to donate,” he added.
The blood donation campaign registered 31 participants with 28 successful donors.
