KUCHING (June 22): Former Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak vice chairman Cheng Hui Hong, 71, passed away Monday night, according to PKR Kuching branch chairman Dominique Ng.
He said based on information relayed to him, the late Cheng was warded at Sarawak General Hospital here on June 12 after he was found to be Covid-19 positive, and was cremated yesterday afternoon at Nirvana Memorial Park in Bau.
“I have received reliable information that our comrade Cheng Hui Hong, a past leader of DAP and later PKR Kuching, passed away yesterday (Monday) due to Covid-19.
“He was cremated just now, according to information received,” Ng, a former Padungan assemblyman, said yesterday.
“He was a fellow lawyer and my comrade for decades, dating back to the time of the late SKY (Sim Kwang Yang).”
Cheng had served as Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak secretary, and later together with Sim and Ng, joined PKR.
He had contested in several elections under DAP and PKR.
Ng said he did not wish to dwell much on Cheng’s past but said the latter had made mistakes in the latter part of his life and had paid the price.
“But those who know will remember that he was very loyal and a good comrade.
“Rather sad that his life went completely off track in the latter part of his life. He was a good man. He will be missed by a lot of his comrades,” he said.
Cheng is said to be among yesterday’s seven Covid-19 deaths announced by the State Disaster Management Committee.
