East coast floods subside, more return home

KUALA LUMPUR The improving flood situation in two East Coast states in the peninsula has resulted in fewer victims being evacuated to temporary relief centres (PPS).

The numbers today fell to 2,312, down from almost 5,000 yesterday evening.

In Terengganu, the total number of victims was 1,218 from 321 families as at 8am compared with 4,139 people from 991 families yesterday.

State Disaster Management Committee secretariat chief Che Adam A Rahman said currently only 18 evacuation centres were still open, 11 in Dungun and seven in Kemaman.

“In Kemaman, the flood is receding with the number of victims falling to 766 from 197 families compared with 3,625 people from 846 families yesterday evening.

“The number of flood victims in Dungun was also down to 452 from 124 families compared with 514 people from 145 families earlier,” he told reporters.

The Irrigation and Drainage Department reported that most main rivers in Terengganu had returned to normal levels this morning while only Sungai Kemaman at the Paya Paman Pump House, Kemaman, recorded a level of 4.64m, which is above the danger level at 4.5m.

In Kelantan, the number of flood victims as at 8am also fell to 1,094 people compared with 1,156 victims yesterday evening following fair weather since yesterday.

According to the Social Welfare Department’s Info Bencana app, Pasir Mas district is still recording the highest number of evacuees with 986 people from 366 families housed at 12 temporarily relief centres.

In Tanah Merah, two relief centres are still active with 79 victims from 29 families comprising 65 persons at SM Agama Kajang and 14 in the community hall.

In Kuala Krai, flood victims were sheltered at the evacuation centre at SK Banggol Guchil with 29 victims from nine families.

As at 8am, the reading at Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang showed the water level was still above the danger level at 10.22m (danger level: 9m), while Sungai Golok in Kuala Jambu, Tumpat, was above the warning level at 2.48m (warning level: 2.15m).
