The Kuala Lumpur Police has recently announced that it will be banning electric scooters (e-scooters) from riding on the city roads starting 1 January 2021. The vehicle will only be permitted to be used in gazetted or permitted areas such as playgrounds or around shopping centers, it added.
E-scooters are categorised as micro-mobility vehicles, which has become a trend in urban areas for being readily available, and allowing pedestrians to quickly traverse from one place to another. However, Kuala Lumpur Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief ACP Zulkefly Yahya said that the public has filed many complaints regarding the vehicle irresponsibly used on the road, which could endanger both riders and other road users.

He added that starting in January, action could be taken under the Road Transport Act where errant individuals will be fined RM300 and repeat offenders face a maximum fine of RM1,000 or 3 months imprisonment. Those who insist on using e-scooters on the road for whatever reason are required to apply for a special permission license from the director-general of the Road Transport Department (JPJ).
Zulkefly Yahya noted that the police have identified three areas in the city where the vehicles are actively used, namely around Dataran Merdeka, KLCC, and Bukit Bintang. In addition, he also said that the police are currently advising the public to stop riding them outside of the permitted areas to ensure no inconveniences to potentially occur.
