Disobeying King tantamount to treason, says Sabah Umno Youth

KOTA KINABALU: Failure to obey the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong’s call to reconvene Parliament is tantamount to treason, said Sabah Umno Youth chief Ir Abdul Aziz Julkarnain.

He said the youth wing is in full support of the King’s call to reconvene Parliament as soon as possible to enable the Members of Parliament (MPs) to debate on the Emergency Ordinance and the National Recovery Plan.

“Sabah Umno Youth stands in solidarity with the Umno National Youth Chief, Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, who had urged the government to reconvene Parliament within 14 days in order to obey the order of the King and the Malay Rulers.

“Failure to execute the order can be seen as a form of treason and disrespect towards the King as the head of the country,” said Aziz in a statement on Tuesday.

He pointed out that the government’s emergency proclamation did nothing to curb the spread of Covid-19 virus – it only made it worse.

He questioned why the government had only introduced the National Recovery Plan when the emergency period is just about to end.

“Is this just a pre-emptive move to justify a request for the extension of the emergency?” asked Aziz.

Sabah Umno Youth had also urged the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government to reconvene the state assembly as soon as possible.

Aziz said that the state assembly sitting should be resumed, as there is a need for the lawmakers to debate on Sabah’s immunisation programme.

He explained that Sabah’s vaccination rate (11.72 per cent) is currently the lowest in the country.
