KUCHING (Aug 20): Kuching remains on top of the list with over 60 per cent or 1,601 new Covid-19 cases out of Sarawak’s new record high of 2,548 cases today, said the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).
Despite so, no deaths were recorded in the state today, making the death toll remained at 495.
To date, the state recorded a total of 94,564 Covid-19 cases since the pandemic began last year.
The last time Sarawak recorded a new high in Covid-19 infections was Aug 16 with 1,566 cases, and the highest daily fatalities was nine on May 29.
Today, SDMC said, while Kuching was the only district reporting four-digit cases, 99.96 per cent of the new infections fell under Category 1 and 2, or no symptoms and mild symptoms respectively.
Only one out of the total 2,548 new cases were Category 5, SDMC said in its daily Covid-19 update.
Serian came in second with 240 cases followed by Bau (131), Samarahan (116), Lundu (94), Simunjan (60), Tebedu (41), Sibu (38), Bintulu (37), Belaga (36), Pusa (30), Mukah (22), Sri Aman (22), Sarikei (12) and Asajaya (11).
Other districts that reported single-digit cases were Subis (9), Miri (8), Saratok(7), Selangau (6), Bukit Mabong (5), Pakan (5), Tatau (4), Lawas (3), Kapit (2), Sebauh (2), and one case each – Betong, Kanowit, Lubok Antu, Song, Julau and Beluru.
SDMC said 1,519 cases of the total infections, which were detected through close contact tracing, were asymptomatic during testing.
As for import cases, SDMC said two were from individuals returning from Indonesia and one from Qatar, and all cases were asymptomatic.
Thirteen other imported cases were from other states and territories, with just one of them symptomatic. They were individuals returning from Kuala Lumpur (6), Sabah (5) and one each from Selangor and Kedah.
Meanwhile, 355 cases in the state have recovered and discharged today, bringing the cumulative number of recoveries to 81,198 or 85.87 per cent of the cumulative cases to date.
The number of active cases in Sarawak was currently at 12,686.
