Cathay Mee Stall: the best mee goreng in Ipoh

The mee goreng at Cathay is the real deal. (KY Speaks)

When it comes to Ipoh food, kai si hor fun and chicken rice usually come to mind first. If you go down the list, you are unlikely to end up with mee goreng.

This is Ipoh, right?

However, since we like to go a bit off the mainstream, mee goreng (and mee rebus) in Ipoh is what we are going to talk about today.

One particular hawker spot selling mee goreng on the ground floor of New Beauty Hotel is called Cathay Mee Stall.

Searching for the name ‘Cathay Mee Stall’ will also get you there.

Manned by an Indian couple, the set-up is simple and there are three choices – mee goreng, mee rebus and rojak (like mee rebus without the mee, essentially).

For an after-hike refuelling exercise, we ordered a plate of mee goreng with a plate of mee rebus.

The mee rebus is a tad superior to the mee goreng. (KY Speaks)

The mee rebus came within minutes, and the assembly was a lot simpler. The mee goreng took 30 minutes as the stall gets quite busy even during the Movement Control Order, with a lot of takeaways and delivery orders.

Both versions came with generous helpings of ingredients – including egg (boiled in rebus, fried in mee goreng), prawn fritters, potatoes, tofu and such.

The noodle used here is also a little thinner than usual, giving it more surface area to soak up the yummy sauce.

The mee goreng is said to be the best in Ipoh, and indeed it is very well-fried and a delicious rendition of the dish. However, the mee rebus is perhaps a tad superior.

Fans of mee rebus or mee Jawa should not miss this version as the sauce and pairing of the ingredients hit just the right spot.

After all, Ipoh isn’t all about Chinese food, right?
