Boy drowns in Inanam River

KOTA KINABALU: The body of an 11-year-old boy was found in Inanam River, near a petrol station, along Jalan Tuaran Lama here on Tuesday morning.

The body of Almunel Unim was located under a bridge by fire and rescue services personnel at around 6.25am.

It was learned that the boy, a foreigner, had gone to the river with friends for a swim around 12pm on Monday.

He was reported missing and a search and rescue (SAR) operation was carried out by the Lintas Fire and Rescue Services Department at 9.06pm the same day.

The SAR was called off Monday night and resumed at 6am Tuesday morning.

The victim’s body was found about half an hour later.

Lintas Fire and Rescue station chief Agustavia Joe Guasi said a distress call was received at 9pm on Monday and 12 personnel were deployed to the location.

“We called off the SAR operation at 11.45pm on Monday and resumed at 6am today (Tuesday).

“The victim’s body was located not far from where he was first reported missing at 6.25am,” he said, adding it was handed over to the police for further action.
