Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali has apologised for his shortcomings after he, along with other Cabinet members in the Perikatan National government, tendered his resignation to the Agong

In a tweet published at 3.46pm yesterday, 16 August, Azmin said he did his best to resolve the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It has always been my intention to address the economic hardships and preserve jobs for the people,” said the international trade and industry minister under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

“Although the economy is recovering, many [have] suffered during this ruthless global pandemic. My sincere apologies for any of my shortcomings. It has been an honour to serve you.”

His tweet came shortly after Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced in a press conference that he had stepped down from the Prime Minister post.

Meanwhile, former housing and local government minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin thanked Muhyiddin for leading the country for almost two years

“The highest appreciation and thanks to Muhyiddin Yassin for his service and devotion to lead the country for almost two years. Now, Tan Sri will lead the country as the caretaker PM starting today,” she tweeted yesterday.

“In the COVID-19 pandemic situation, it is certainly not an easy task. However, Tan Sri remained steadfast and committed to supporting the country that is facing this difficult challenge.”

She ended the Twitter thread by expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the housing and local government minister.

Zuraida was the housing and local government minister in both the PN and Pakatan Harapan governments, while Azmin was the economic affairs minister in the PH government.

She and Azmin were instrumental in the political manoeuvring that took place in February 2020 — dubbed the ‘Sheraton Move’ — before the country went into lockdown the following month.
