KUCHING (Mar 5): Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan is looking forward to the new Sabah and Sarawak Affairs portfolio in the Perikatan Nasional (PN) federal cabinet and bringing the socio-economic development in East Malaysia up to the level as their counterparts in Peninsular Malaysia.

The Deputy Chief Minister said the creation of such portfolio would be an avenue for Sarawak and Sabah to see some catching up in terms of socio-economic development.

“The creation of a special portfolio of Sabah and Sarawak Affairs by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is certainly a platform for Sabah and Sarawak to have the same socio-economic development as Peninsular Malaysia has,” he said in a statement following a socio-economic committee virtual meeting at Wisma Sumber Alam in Petra Jaya here yesterday.

The inaugural meeting was chaired by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.

Awang Tengah said he hoped that the socio-economic committee would be able to address and resolve economic issues in the state and country.

“This is to ensure that all states in Malaysia are able to progress together in line with the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030,” the Minister of International Trade and Industry, Industrial Terminal and Entrepreneur Development said.

He extended his appreciation to the PN federal government for its commitment in ensuring that the rights of Sabah and Sarawak would continue to be protected as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

Also present was Minister of Works and Petra Jaya MP Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof.

During a recent special interview in conjunction with his first anniversary as the premier, Muhyiddin said he would ensure that Sabah and Sarawak were given fair treatment in various aspects.

With this, he announced the creation of the Sabah and Sarawak Affairs portfolio in the PN federal cabinet.

“Sabah and Sarawak must be given fair treatment. That is why I have appointed a minister who manages Sabah and Sarawak affairs and the MA63. We will evaluate and refine. We have reached common agreement on some matters,” he added.
