KUCHING (June 30): The Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) will allow akad nikah or the solemnisation of marriage under the National Recovery Plan (NPR) Phase One from tomorrow (July 1).

According to the guidelines issued by MIS, couples who have obtained permission can have the akad nikah at divisional or district Islamic Religious Department offices or MIS premises according to standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“The maximum attendance is eight people (including the bride and witnesses) and is subject to the capacity of the space used.

“Customary ceremonies such as exchanging gifts, wearing rings, or the like and feasts to celebrate the marriage contract are not allowed,” MIS said in a statement.

Couples and those in attendance must also check-in with the MySejahtera application and show the risk status in the application to the premises’ check-in officer.

Only individuals with low risk status and temperature not exceeding 37.5 degrees Celsius would be allowed to attend.

Couples and those present must wear face masks, use hand sanitiser, refrain from shaking hands, and adhere to the appointment time set.

The duration of the akad nikah for each couple should not exceed 20 minutes, including the recitation of the taklik.

MIS added the SOPs may be amended from time to time.
