89 candidates from Sarawak achieve CGPA of 4.0 in 2020 STPM

KUCHING (July 1): A total of 89 candidates from Sarawak achieved Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.00 in the 2020 Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), marking a slight reduction compared to 96 in the 2019 STPM.

Sarawak Education director Dr Norisah Suhaili said 1,761 or 31.72 per cent candidates who sat for the exam last year received a CGPA of 3.00 and above.

“Three candidates with special needs in Kuching, Miri and Sibu obtained outstanding results, receiving a CPGA of 3.50,” she said in a statement today.

They are Kong Ze Kang from SMK St. Thomas in Kuching, Vanescy Hamphry Rangga from Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang in Miri and Barry Putera Abdullah from SMK Methodist in Sibu.

Norisah said 11 schools in Sarawak achieved excellent STPM results with a CGPA of over 3.00.

These schools are SMK Chung Hua, Sibu; SMK Sacred Heart, Sibu; SMK Bako, Kuching, SMK Batu Kawa, Padawan; SMK Merbau, Miri; SMK Bandar Sibu, Sibu; SMK Saribas, Saribas; SMK Batu Lintang, Kuching; SMK Green Road, Kuching; SMK Tung Hua, Sibu and SMK Methodist, Sibu.

She said a total of 5,768 candidates in Sarawak sat for the 2020 STPM, marking a drop of 69 compared to the 5,837 candidates for the 2019 STPM.

“Of the candidates for the 2020 STPM, 5,754 or 99.76 per cent of them were school candidates while 14 or 0.24 per cent were private candidates.

“Overall, 5,454 or 98.23 per cent of the school candidates received their certificates in 2020, compared to 5,494 or 98.07 per cent the previous year,” she added.

Out of the total candidates, 22 or 0.4 per cent candidates passed all five subjects, 3,622 or 65.24 per cent passed four subjects, 976 or 17.58 per cent passed three subjects and 519 or 9.35 per cent passed two subjects, and 315 or 5.67 pe cent passed at least one subject.

The CGPA for Sarawak’s 2020 STPM results is 2.65, marking a slight drop of 0.01 compared to the CGPA for 2019.

Norisah said nine of the 21 subjects taken by the candidates showed an improved pass rate compared to the previous year.

The subjects are General Studies, Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese Language, Arabic Language, Literature in English, Syariah, Georgraphy, Business Study and Sports Science.

She said the Malaysian Examinations Council (MPM) had emailed the result slips to all candidates of 2020 STPM.
