288 summonses issued so far for vehicles with modified exhausts, operation to last till March 31

KUCHING (March 13): The Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department has issued a total of 288 summonses to those who have illegally modified their vehicle’s exhaust system between March 1 and March 12.

The statewide operation, which will run from March 1 to 31, is to clamp down on vehicle owners whose modified exhausts are creating unnecessary noise pollution.

“We have checked a total of 6,823 vehicles made up of 2,451 motorcycles; 2,411 cars and 1,961 other vehicles such as lorries,” said the department’s head Supt Alexson Naga Chabu in a statement today.

He also said a total of 171 operations were held involving roadblocks and spot checks of vehicles together with the Sarawak Department of Environment and the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

The department of environment, he said, has also issued five notices or compounds followed by JPJ with 37 compounds.

Besides slapping summons on vehicles with modified exhausts, the police have also issued a total of 2,645 summons for other road offences.

The offences are: not wearing a seatbelt (35); modifying the appearance of their vehicles (196); overloaded (88); no driver’s license (121); failing to produce a driver’s licence (131); license plate not up to standard (152); using fancy license plates (144); broken brake lights (105); no helmet (78); using a handphone while driving (22); no side mirrors (128); failing to display the ‘P’ sign (78) and expired driver’s license (69).

“Police have also seized a total of 44 vehicles comprising of 43 motorcycles and one car during the operation,” said Alexson.
